This is a legitimate question when you’re just starting out. A wall, even one that is perfectly smooth and painted white, is not designed to reflect light optimally. It absorbs much of the detail and brightness from your projector.Projeo screens use technical fabrics with specific surface treatments. These surfaces manage light reflection to preserve contrast, maintain the film’s original colour accuracy and eliminate visual imperfections. Choosing a dedicated screen ensures you can realise the full potential of your 4K UHD projector.
For standard-throw projectors installed at the back of the room, light output and light source technology will guide your choice. A high-brightness model using a traditional lamp or an LED light source, such as the Epson EH-LS12000 or the BenQ W4000i, will pair beautifully with our ALR LT screen to maximise contrast in a living room. Conversely, an exceptional projector with a native 4K matrix and a pure laser light source, such as the Sony VPL-XW5000 or the JVC DLA-NZ500, will reveal its full subtlety, nuances of black and rich colour reproduction on a Projeo neutral-gain white screen, thereby preserving the absolute purity of its high-end optics.
The architectural and lighting conditions of your room determine the type of screen and the type of housing best suited to it. If your space is a residential living room with light-coloured walls and plenty of natural light, an ALR technical screen is essential to combat light pollution and prevent the image from looking washed out. In a dedicated, completely darkened and acoustically treated room, a classic white screen will provide good contrast.The layout of the room also dictates the physical format of the screen. Gain is a measure of a screen’s reflectivity. A value of 1.0 serves as a neutral reference: the screen reflects light completely uniformly in all directions.If the gain is greater than 1.0, the screen concentrates the light towards the centre to boost brightness, which is ideal for well-lit rooms or low-power projectors. If the gain is less than 1.0, as with our grey screens, the screen absorbs some of the ambient light to deepen blacks and improve contrast. The choice of gain therefore depends directly on the power of your projector and the brightness of your room.
Directivity refers to the viewing angle beyond which the image loses half its brightness. This is known as the half-gain angle.A screen with low directivity offers a very wide viewing angle, allowing all viewers to enjoy the same image quality, whether they are sitting right in the centre or at the sides of the sofa.Conversely, highly directional screens require viewers to remain directly in front of the screen, but they have the advantage of reducing reflections from the side walls.
